The coin was in the air and at the final match of the World Cup Argentina fought Germany to the end.
The World Cup final was spectacular as expected and Germany
reached glory as anticipated. However, Messi and company put a good fight
despite being the underdogs of the match. Everyone who has mistakenly analyzed
Argentina as being no match for the Teutons made a huge mistake.
It is true that Germany seemed to demolish every one of
their opponents. But carefully analyzing the results one could argue that they
were exceptionally great against Brazil only. The reason for that is that
Germany beat Portugal with allegedly controversial calls by the referee. In
their second match they came back from behind to tie Ghana and in their third match
they barely scored that one goal in which the USA has taken them for a long
ride.
In the knock out round they had run a little more in order
to beat Algeria. Meanwhile, Argentina was quietly winning all their matches;
though, one could argue that their rivals were not top teams. But at this level
and especially in soccer it is possible to expect the unexpected as well. Each
of the World Cup teams were the top 32 and some have better history than others
but at the end whoever puts it in the net wins.
Argentina was not destroying the opponent teams and for that
reason some might have thought that the squad was not as good. The reality is
that Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iran played defensively; Nigeria on the other
hand came to attack, which opened the spaces for both teams creating a
spectacular game with five goals (Arg 3 – 2 Nig).
Switzerland, Belgium and Netherlands were tough opponents
for Argentina. Yet the South Americans managed to put ice on those games and
were able to come out as winners.
The Final game was the true test for Germany and they did
really well. Both teams played tactically and with rhythm. Both teams had their
chances, one mistake would change everything and at the end there would have to
be a winner. Germany fought hard, had the merit and for that reason are the World
Champions.
