A Week Ago Argentina Qualified to the World Cup

A week ago Argentina was hanging on a thread as their chance to qualify for the World Cup was slipping away. After so many disappointments; and poor performances in previous matches, they only had a must win option against Ecuador if they wanted to secure a ticket to Russia next summer.

It was a complicated situation occurring that Tuesday night across the CONMEBOL as other nations were fighting to make it to Russia with the exception of Brazil.

Here is where it was interesting for Messi and co; If Colombia and Chile did not win their matches Argentina would go through if they beat Ecuador. Otherwise they are most likely to go to the play offs.

But Brazil 3-0 victory ended Chile’s chances to claim a spot in Russia next summer and Colombia and Peru ended in a 1-1 draw, which was considered a bit controversial. Peru will have to go to the play offs against New Zealand.

But Back to Argentina! What a must see match that was against Ecuador and its high altitude.  The albiceleste has suffered defeats in Quito before, but this time the magic of Messi had to appear if they wanted to make it through.

This match had all the ingredients that make a movie a successful hit at the box office. It truly was not for the faint-hearted given that not one minute has gone by when Ecuador has put one in the scoreboard. GOOOAAAALLL!

What was going through the Argentine fans’ mind? I truly don’t want to know but it must have been an agony of the worst kind. Luckily though they had the sorcerer with them, but not the crazy guy in the stands wearing feathers. No, their wizard and only magician capable of getting them out of the hole they dug themselves into was Leonel Messi.

Their captain appeared when they needed him the most; as it was not an easy task to overcome Ecuador at their home turf. By minute 12 it was a tie, and later at minute 19 it was 2-1 Argentina leading.

But the one cushion goal that must have made many heads explode; especially, those soccer fans that wanted to see Messi and Argentina in the next World Cup came in the 61st minute. Messi scored one of the most important and heroics hat trick of his career.

Even those announcers that constantly criticized him were screaming to the top of their lungs GOOAAAAAAL    GOAAAAAAL GOOOOOOAAAL.
Undoubtedly, the best of Messi appeared on the pitch answering all his critics, by giving back to an entire nation the dream of a World Cup title.

Ronaldo the Great

Ronaldo the great one was simply given ten other players to make history. Real Madrid and their superstar Cristiano Ronaldo managed to retain their status as Europe’s top club as they made history winning the Champions League back to back.

Ronaldo’s attacking power was able to penetrate Juve’s not-so fantastic defense. Before the CL final match took place in Cardiff football fans were betting on the best defense against the best strikers. Once again; in football, in a competitive match such as the Champions League final it has proved that the best defense is to attack and not give your opponent the opportunity to organize plays.

Real Madrid has been in fantastic form in order to take all the football compliments from fans around the world. Though, they would have rather won a treble as they aimed to do at the beginning of the season they will have to wait for that chance as their arch rival FC Barcelona took the Copa del Rey home.  However, people mostly remember the big prize simply because being crowned champions of Europe against very competitive teams is not an easy task.

The most difficult task ahead for Real Madrid is to retain their crown next season. Undoubtedly, they are in a great form and they have the talent to continue their winning streak. However, as many would say arriving to the top is easier than staying on top. Fortunately, they have the summer break to think about that one but for now Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid should enjoy the fruits and juices of victory. Congratulations Real Madrid for an amazing run in the 2016-2017 season.

Real Madrid Los Fantásticos

Real Madrid Has The Bragging Rights!

Real Madrid have been a fantastic and dynamic team this season and they truly deserve that accolades of winning a championship. Though, it was not an easy campaign battling against tough teams but at the end arriving and staying at the top is what brings the silverware home.

Throughout the season Los Blancos suffered some upsets, the most noticeable the last clasico at home when they lost 3-2 to arch rivals Barcelona, despite that they manage to climb back to stay in the pathway to winning La Liga.

Barca fans: Congratulations to Real Madrid for Winning La Liga
Real Madrid fans: Now say it without crying!

Zinadine policy of rotating players worked really well especially with players like Isco, James Rodriguez. But most importantly it helps to have superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo; arguable the best player in the world, and decisive players like Marcelo and Sergio Ramos.

There is no doubt that it was a tough campaign which makes the winning even more tasteful. Real Madrid was being forced to win their last four matches since it was being pressured by Messi and Barcelona. At the end Madrid took the prize home by three points clear from their arch rivals and for that reason I say Congratulations on your 33rd La Liga conquest.

Post Clásico and What We Learned

As it was expected the clasico was an unbelievable action packed game not for the faint hearted.  What a game this was! I mean the big screen was set somewhere in New York City for a cocktail party to watch this match. Somewhere in Argentina and somewhere in Central America and a lot of places in the Middle East and Asia people were glued to their TVs to watch a soccer match miles and miles away.

Every year we have come to know ‘el clasico’ as the fiercest rivalry in the beautiful game. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are arguably the best football clubs in the world with their respective stars Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Words can’t describe the emotions of these fans as the whistle blows to start the match. Every attempt to score is filled with the screams of Noooo! Or GoaaaL! Because in this match at any given moment there is a defending team and an attacking team with long passes, short passes and counter-attacks. A clasico match gives no room for slowing down and this one was certainly not the exception.

Goalkeepers Ter Stegen and Kaylor Navas had one of their busiest days at work. Their saves from far and close range were decisive! One can say or blame the striker for missing from inside the box, but the goalkeepers cat-like reflexes deserve a lot of credit as well.  I was impressed how Ter Stegen stopped some of Ronaldo’s low rockets! And I was impressed at how Keylor stopped Pique’s and Suarez close range shots!

The hero of the match was Barca’s superstar Lionel Messi as he appeared when his team needed him the most. He scored the first goal to tie Real Madrid 1-1 and scored in stoppage time in a counterattack to win the match 3-2. Undoubtedly they (Barca) needed these three points to keep La Liga title hopes alive and to challenge Real Madrid in the remaining of the season.

What we learned is that the emotions of el clasico will not go away any time soon. And with the help of new media and technology this game day becomes more and more popular every year. The smack talk and the build up are incredible and some partial fans get a ride in the bandwagon as well. When we follow the stars, when we love the game, when we love the teams we only wish that there were more matches like El Clasico.
